Photograph of the assembly of tribal representatives at the Loya Jirgah on the 2nd of September, 1928. King Amanullah Khan and Queen Suraya are shown surrounded by subjects who have been forced to wear European dress for the first time in their lives.
Such compulsory modernization lead to King Amanullah's overthrow a few months later, when Habibullah Kalakani led an uprising against the King and his attempts at westernization.

Sardar Hayatullah Khan was stepbrother of King Amanullah Khan. He was Minister of Education (1923-1925) and Minister of Justice (1925-1929). Sardar Hayatullah Khan and another brother of the king, Sardar Abdul Majid Khan were killed in July 1929 by Habibullah Kalakani's regime.

1928: Afghan Ladies in public garden without Burqa



Afghan ladies in Bagh-i-Umoomi (Public Garden), Paghman, Afghanistan, 1928. They are wearing light diaphanous veils introduced by Queen Soraya to replace the head-to-toe Burqa. No woman wearing the full head-to-toe burqa was allowed to enter the Park.

Shinwari revolt, 1929
