Caption: "The Amir of Afghanistan, whose death is reported to have taken place on October 3, entered Cabul as Ameer in 1880 at the invitation of Indian government. Since that date, he has justified Sir Lepel Griffin's description of him as "one of most remarkable of Asiatic statesmen". He received an annual bounty of 180,000 rupees from the Indian government, and although his leanings towards England rather than Russia were dictated by motives of policy, there can be no doubt that his loyalty was sincere as far as it went. The visit of his second son, the Shahzada Nasrullah, is still fresh in the memory of Londoners. This portrait by Mr.Percy Spence, is from the photograph in Lord Robert's 'Forty-one years in India' by the courtesy of Macmillans.
