Killa Saifullah was declared as a separate administrative district on 14th December 1988. Prior to that it was part of the Zhob district. It derives its name from a mud fort, built by Saifullah Khan, an influential person of the Khoidadzai branch of the Sanzar Khel Kakars.
The district is bounded on the north and east by Zhob district, on the south by Loralai district, and on the west by Pishin district and Afghanistan. The total area of the district is 6831 square kilometers.
Majority of the inhabitants of the district belong to the two branches of the Kakar tribe: Sanzar Khel and Sanatia.
