Caption: "The Afridis, the levies of whom held the fort of Ali Masjid, are a powerful tribe, brave and fond of fighting within the shelter of their own hills. The Indian government pays them annually a sum of money, and employs a certain number of tribesmen in keeping open the Khyber Pass. In the last Afghan war the Afridis, who are now in revolt, threw in their lot with us."
