The photos are from an album of photographs showing individuals representing the Kyrgyz, Kazak, Uzbek, Sart, Tajik, Iranian, Gypsy, Indian, Afghan, Arab, and Jewish populations of Russian Turkestan. It was commissioned by Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufman (1818–82), the first governor-general of Russian Turkestan. The original Russian word for Afghan in the caption is "Avgantsy".
