"Afridi villages are quite different from plain villages. Every family lives in a big fortress like house which has guard towers. These towers or Tapu are built on some high and prominent place in such a position from where an expected attack can be satisfactorily met. If there is hostility with a neighbour tribe or neighbour family, for months males of both sides entrenched in fortifications fire shots at each other."
