Atak fort was founded by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1582. Abu Fazal, the official historian of Akbar, says ;
"The foundation of Atak Banaras was laid by his Majesty in person on the 15th Khurdad, two g'haris after midday; and the fort was called by him Atak Banaras, so that its name might correspond to Katak Banaras (Orissa, India), which forms the eastern boundary of the realm. The building was superintended by Khwajah Shamsuddin Khawafi, who had recently come from Bengal." (Akbarnama, III, p-335)
